5 Tips for Landscaping on the Cheap

Looking to add to your landscape without spending a lot of dough? We've compiled a list of five ideas you can use to fill out your landscaping project while keeping more money in your wallet. Read through, and if you have some tips of your own, feel free to share them!

Grow potatoes in an old tire. Tires are great to use for gardening, especially when you use them to grow potatoes. Just fill the bottom rim with compost, toss your seed potatoes in, and then add more compost until the tire is full.

Become a stone collector. Sure, you can buy stones for landscaping, but why do that when you can pick them up off the ground for free? Keep an eye out for neat-looking stones and, when you come across them, pick them up and add them to your collection. You'll eventually have enough to use for your landscaping project.

Feed the birds. A bird feeder is a relatively inexpensive item to build or purchase, and the landscaping return on investment is well worth it. Your yard will soon be hosting all sorts of birds who stop by for a quick bite to eat.

Add a bench. It's great to have a place to sit outdoors, and benches can usually be found pretty cheap on sites like craigslist, at thrift stores, or at yard sales. Get hunting!

Keep your eyes peeled for freebies. For instance, demolition sites are great places to find brick, cinder blocks, and more.

Awesome Retaining Wall Ideas

A retaining wall is a wall that is meant to hold back earth from moving forward or downward. In the context of landscape design, retaining walls are used to create a layered effect -- giant "steps" from the ground level to the next level of earth. A retaining wall can be made of stone, cement, wood, or another type of material.

We've looked around and collected photos of retaining walls that we feel are really well done. We hope that these retaining walls will inspire some ideas in your own head. When you're ready to have your retaining wall installed on your property, be sure to give Environmental Design a call.
